I almost bought a Juniper MX104 based on the sticker price alone. Glad I didn't.

Those questions feel practical. But they're missing the same thing I missed with the MX104 quote.
Let's take the multimeter question. The best multimeter for an electrician who spends all day on commercial panels is not the same as the best one for a homeowner who checks an outlet twice a year. There is no single 'best.' There is only the right tool for your specific context, your specific risk tolerance, and your specific budget.
The transparent smartphone is a fun idea. When I actually looked at one, the camera quality and battery life didn't hold up to phones at the same price from mainstream brands. The 'wow' factor is a real part of a purchase, but it shouldn't outweigh the operating costs. A phone that needs a case and a screen replacement more often is a higher TCO phone, no matter how cool it looks.
Same for the DuraForce Pro 3. It's marketed for rugged jobsite use. If you drop phones for a living, the ruggedness might be worth carrying a second device. But before paying a premium, ask: 'What's the support cost? What happens when the battery degrades? Is it actually compatible with the network bands I need?' That last one is a big deal for field workers. A tough phone that can't hold a signal in a building is just a brick.
Per FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov), claims about durability and performance need to be truthful and substantiated. So when a vendor says 'military-grade drop protection' or 'all-day battery,' I want to see the test data. If they can show it, fine. If not, that's a red flag, not a marketing statement.
I don't have a magic formula. But after six years of tracking invoices and comparing quotes, I have a few rules.
First, I compare total cost of ownership, not list price. My procurement policy now requires quotes from at least three vendors, and every quote needs to include support, shipping, taxes, and any 'required' add-ons. If a vendor can't give me a line-item breakdown, I assume they're hiding something.
Second, I verify current pricing. Even USPS changed its First-Class Mail rate to $0.73 in January 2025 (usps.com/stamps). If shipping costs are part of your deployment, don't guess. The same goes for annual support renewal pricing. Last year's number is probably not this year's number.

The best question isn't 'what's the price?' It's 'what's this going to cost me over the life of the product, and who's going to help me if I get stuck?'
That's the question I wish I'd asked before my first budget review. It's the question I ask before every review now. Simple. But it changes everything.
