By the time I signed the PO for our network refresh, I'd spent about three weeks reading datasheets and going back and forth on Juniper vs Cisco. This FAQ is the version I wish someone had handed me at the beginning. I'm the office administrator for a 180-person company, and I manage IT and telecom purchasing—roughly $180k a year across 12 vendors. I report to operations and finance, which means every decision has to make sense to both sides. I'm not a network engineer, but I know enough to ask the right questions. These are the ones that mattered.
The short version: we chose Juniper EX4400-48MP switches, HPE Juniper networking made procurement slightly more complicated, and the Platinum BP5450 cordless phones were the least glamorous but most appreciated part of the upgrade.
Because both Cisco and Juniper sell excellent switches, the real answer is in the specifics. Our network engineer compared Cisco Catalyst 9300 and Juniper EX4400-48MP. The Catalyst is absolutely solid. The Juniper won because of 90W PoE per port and the Mist AI management layer. The 90W matters because we're powering wireless access points and cameras from the same switch. Mist AI matters because it shows our part-time IT consultant where to look before a user calls.
I have mixed feelings about going against a default preference. On one hand, buying Cisco would have been the safe story. On the other, it would have meant paying more for features we would only partly use. I still respect Cisco. We just didn't need the extra licensing layer. Bottom line: Juniper was not the flashy choice for us; it was the practical one.
As of early 2025, HPE has closed the acquisition of Juniper Networks. That's why new quotes say 'HPE Juniper networking' instead of just 'Juniper'. According to HPE's official newsroom, the deal brings together Aruba and Juniper to create a networking leader for the AI era. For a purchaser, it means you can technically buy switching, wireless, and security from one vendor.
The integration is not perfectly smooth on the buying side, though. We got one quote from HPE Enterprise and another from Juniper's reseller, with different part numbers for the same switch. (Note to self: always ask for the manufacturer product page reference on the quote.) What was best practice in 2020, when I took over purchasing, may not apply in 2025. The vendor landscape is changing, and old rules about 'nobody got fired for buying [x]' are not a strategy.
We ordered the EX4400-48MP for our two wiring closets because it is the high-power version of the EX4400 line. According to Juniper's EX4400 product page, it has 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports with IEEE 802.3bt PoE—up to 90W per port—and four 10/25GbE uplinks. That's overkill for a normal office. For us, it means one switch can power access points, video bars, and cameras without extra power injectors.
Once we mapped the power budget, the 48MP was a no-brainer. So glad I didn't save money on the non-PoE model. Almost did. It would have meant a shelf full of injectors and another point of failure. The Mist AI management layer is the bigger reason. It identifies abnormal behavior before a user reports it, which saves our part-time IT team a ton of time. The EX4400-48MP also supports virtual chassis, so we manage both closets as one device. (I let the engineer explain that part; all I know is the network has been stable.)
Cordless phones are easy to ignore until the front desk can't hear the warehouse. We tested the Platinum BP5450 for two weeks before the upgrade. Voice quality stayed clear near the loading dock, and the system connected without a separate software subscription. (I really should ask our vendor about the battery replacement cycle for the BP5450.)
If you're moving to VoIP, don't assume your cordless phones need to be on the same network as your switches. Ours work independently, and that simplicity helped. The phone system was a small project, but it made the whole office feel upgraded. Sometimes the boring parts matter more than the shiny ones.
Sticker price is only the beginning. We compared three years of ownership: hardware, support, management licenses, and the hours spent configuring and monitoring. The Cisco Catalyst 9300 is a solid switch, and I still like Cisco. But when we added Meraki licensing and Smart Net, it came in higher than the Juniper EX4400-48MP with Mist AI. I won't quote exact numbers because pricing depends on reseller discounts and region, but the difference was way more than I expected—roughly 18-20% on the network refresh.
When I took over purchasing in 2020, I compared only sticker prices on a phone order and missed the install fees. That lesson followed me. For this project, I made sure every quote included setup, licensing, and support. Another red flag: quotes that show the hardware but list licensing as 'to be determined.' That's how you get a surprise at renewal. The hidden cost I almost missed was the Mist AI subscription renewal. Looking back, I should have asked for a three-year subscription in the initial quote. At the time, I was focused on capital cost. Fund the renewal from day one.
The question nobody puts in a datasheet is 'How will the acquisition change my procurement process?' After HPE Juniper networking became official, I had to create a new vendor in our accounting system because the legal entity changed. Existing support contracts continued, but new purchase orders went through HPE's ordering portal. If your company has strict vendor approval rules, ask about that before you sign.
Also ask whether the quote is eligible for HPE Financial Services if you want to lease. Our CFO brought it up at the last minute, and it would have been nice to include the option in the original proposal. That's a boring administrative detail, but it nearly delayed the refresh by a month.
Looking back, I should have bought one EX4400-48MP and run a real pilot before ordering the rest. At the time, the project timeline was tight and I didn't want to add a step. The pilot would have caught two configuration quirks—VLAN naming for voice and the PoE budget in one of the closets—before we replicated them across both closets. If I could redo that decision, I'd build in two extra weeks. But given what I knew then, the rush was understandable.
Not every mistake costs money. This one cost trips to the data closet and a few awkward conversations with the network engineer. That's enough.
