I'm not a network engineer. I'm the admin who signs the purchase orders for a mid-sized company, and I have to explain why the shiny new gear is sitting on a pallet instead of running traffic. I've bought Juniper switches, routers, firewalls, and access points for the last five years, and about half of my lessons came from mistakes.
This is the checklist I use before a Juniper refresh, whether it's a simple EX4300-48P stack or a bigger router like the Juniper MX480. It's built for non-engineers who own the buying side. Six steps, roughly an hour of work if you have the quotes and the specs in front of you. Maybe you're buying for a school, a clinic, a warehouse, or a team that suddenly has to replace end-of-life gear. This list applies in all of those cases.
The trigger that got me to write this down was a March 2023 failure. We had a switch go down, and we didn't have a support contract on it because the quote was 12% cheaper without one. That saved us $800 upfront and cost us about $3,000 in emergency replacement time. Since then, I run every purchase through this list before I send a PO.
Juniper makes a lot of switches that sound almost the same. EX4300 is a family; Juniper EX4300-48P is a specific model. If you order the wrong variant, you might get the right number of ports but the wrong PoE budget or the wrong uplinks.
Open the Juniper TechLibrary and find the datasheet for the exact SKU. Check Power over Ethernet capacity, maximum power per port, and the option slots. This takes ten minutes, and it's the step that prevents the most problems. In 2024, we had a quote that listed EX4300 without the -48P suffix. It looked fine until we realized it didn't have the PoE budget the project needed.
One more thing: get the part number in the quote, not just the model name. A vendor will write EX4300 and assume you know what that means. I don't. Make them specify the full Juniper EX4300-48P or Juniper MX480 part number.
This is the step that sounds kind of basic, and it's the one that bit me. The Juniper MX480 is a modular chassis. It draws serious power and needs rack depth, airflow, and often a dedicated circuit. The EX4300-48P is easier, but it still needs enough amperage for full PoE load.
The power question is also a DC question. If you're putting an MX480 in a telecom room with a -48V battery plant, you need different power supplies and maybe a different feed. At our battery plant Kansas site, the DC option was the right one, but it wasn't in the original quote.
The numbers said both devices would fit in a standard rack. My gut said to ask the site manager anyway. I didn't, and we had to bring in an electrician to add a circuit at the battery plant Kansas deployment. Jackie, the ops director, still brings it up.
Before you order, send the power specs to whoever manages the site. Ask about rack units, rack depth, cooling, AC vs DC, and after-hours access. If you don't, you're not buying hardware—you're buying a future headache.
Hardware price is only part of the story. Depending on the platform and the features, you may need a Junos license, advanced feature licenses, and a support tier that covers advanced hardware replacement. A bare quote for a Juniper EX4300-48P can look fantastic until you add the licenses for the features your network actually needs.
I went back and forth between two Juniper MX480 quotes for a week. One was about $4,000 cheaper on the base system; the other included service contracts and the licenses we'd need right away. On paper, the cheap one made sense. But my gut said to ask what happens when it breaks. Turns out the cheap one didn't include next-business-day support. The project timeline didn't allow for a week of downtime.
Also, if a vendor makes a big claim about uptime or performance, ask them to substantiate it. Per FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov), claims should be truthful and backed by evidence. That applies to network equipment too. A 'five nines' promise means little if the SLA doesn't include a service credit.
My rule: separate hardware price, license price, and support price. Then compare total cost. The lowest quote often has the smallest line for licenses because the licenses aren't there. This is how you avoid treating the price tag as the total cost of ownership.
Compatibility is where hidden costs live. If you're adding an EX4300-48P to an existing Virtual Chassis, check the supported Junos version and the Virtual Chassis member limits. If the MX480 is connecting to your firewall, confirm the optical modules and cable types. Don't assume a 10GbE port will work with the patch panel you already have.
In 2020, when I took over purchasing, I found a great price from a new vendor for a stack of switches. The quote saved us maybe $700. But they didn't ask about our existing SFP+ modules, and I didn't either. Halfway through installation, we realized the modules were incompatible with the fiber run. We had to order different ones and pay for an extra technician visit. Honestly, that $700 savings turned into a $2,100 problem.
Ask the network engineer or the vendor's presales team to confirm compatibility in writing. Get it included in the quote notes. If they don't want to put it in writing, that's a red flag.
No matter how good the price is, someone has to unload the crate. When a truck arrived at our Kansas site with an MX480 chassis, no one on-site could move it off the liftgate. We had to wait a day for a pallet jack and two extra people. That cost was not in the quote; it showed up in the project schedule.
Ask: Who receives the gear? Is there a dock? Do you need a liftgate delivery? For a battery plant Kansas project, you might be a long way from a major city, and freight carriers don't wait around while you find a forklift.
Also think about documentation. If you've ever had to search for 'how to turn on verizon flip phone' because the box didn't have a manual, you know bad documentation is a product problem. Network gear is no different. Download the quick-start guides and installation manuals before the gear arrives. Save them to a shared folder, not just to a laptop. Jackie still talks about the time we couldn't find the default login for a device because nobody had saved the doc.
When the gear arrives, don't let the boxes sit. Open them, check the packing slips, and record serial numbers in your asset system. Register hardware in Juniper's support portal if the order didn't include registration. This is boring and easy to skip. But if something fails at 2 a.m., you don't want to be hunting for a serial number while the network is down.
I only believed this after ignoring it once. A switch we bought in 2023 failed in 2024. We thought it was covered. It wasn't registered, and our invoice didn't have the serial number. The RMA process took an extra three days because we had to prove where and when we bought it.
Buying Juniper gear isn't hard once you have a process. The mistakes I made were almost always because I was in a hurry and treated the purchase as a price comparison. But a router that sits on a pallet for a week because nobody planned the power circuit is not a good deal. A switch that isn't registered is not a backup plan.
